2nd Order Lighthouse Fresnel Lens - GREATER TUMB LIGHTHOUSE - 1913
Stock Number: #280
This is THE ORIGINAL 1913 Chance Brothers 2nd Order Flashing Lens. Very thick Brass frame and the segments are in very good condition. THIS IS ONE SIDE OF the 4-SIDED 2nd-order lens from this lighthouse. From GREATER Tumb Lighthouse - Persian Gulf. PROVENANCE HISTORY: WE ACQUIRED THIS LENS IN 2006 DIRECTLY FROM MENAS IN BAHRAIN. FURTHER HISTORY FROM MENAS STAFF: "MENAS maintained the Chance brothers lighthouse up until 1977 when the Iranians kicked MENAS off the island and built their own beacon structure, so MENAS removed the lens more out of protest." "There was four panels, I remember my boss at the time telling me many of the outer prisms were damaged whilst transporting the lens back to Bahrain. With regards to the bulls-eyes, one is with you, I made a table out of one for the MENAS office, I have one, but for the centre piece (small Bullseye) all the glass is missing and I have no idea what happened to the fourth one but its probably been scrapped." Greater Tunb and Lesser Tunb (Persian: تنب بزرگ, Tonb-e Bozorg, Arabic: طنب الكبرى, Tunb el-Kubra) are two small islands in the eastern Persian Gulf, close to the Strait of Hormuz. They lie at 26°15′N 55°16′E and 26°14′N 55°08′E, respectively, some 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) from each other and 20 kilometres (12 mi) south of the Iranian island of Qeshm. The islands are administered by Iran as part of its Hormozgan province.[2] Greater Tunb has a surface area of 10.3 km2 (4.0 sq mi). It is known for its red soil. There are conflicting descriptions about its population: While some sources state there are between a few dozen and a few hundred inhabitants,[3] others describe the island as having no native civilian population.[4] There is reported to be an Iranian garrison and naval station, an aircraft runway, a fish storage facility and a red-soil mine. Lesser Tunb has a surface of 2 km2 (0.77 sq mi) and is uninhabited with the exception of a small airfield, harbour, and entrenched Iranian military unit.
